It is widely accepted that certain kinds of links pass value from one page to another. How much value a link passes on depends on many different factors, like the linking page\u2019s quality, authority, trust, relevance, and various others.\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Synonyms\">Synonyms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are many synonyms used to describe link juice, some of the most common of which include:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Link equity <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Backlink authority<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>PageRank (value) <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Link power <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Link value<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"PageRank_.26_link_authority_-_Is_link_juice_measured.3F\">PageRank &amp; link authority &#8211; Is link juice measured?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/wiki\/PageRank\" title=\"PageRank\">PageRank<\/a> was one of the metrics that Google used to determine in what position pages should rank in the <a href=\"\/en\/wiki\/SERP\" title=\"SERP\">SERPs<\/a> (Search Engine Results Pages) based on the links pointing to them. A high PageRank meant the page had a lot of <a href=\"\/en\/wiki\/Backlinks\" title=\"Backlinks\">backlinks<\/a> from high-authority pages (with a high PR). In turn, a low PageRank meant a page had fewer backlinks from pages with a high PageRank. When doing SEO, it\u2019s often said that a link is like a recommendation, and recommendations from trusted pages with a lot of authority are worth more than recommendations from pages with less authority. Google no longer publishes PageRank and the way Google uses links when determining the SERPs has changed a lot since then. The quality of the links, the relevance, and various other factors are now also used when evaluating links.<br \/>\nYou could say that the term link juice used to refer to how PageRank moves from one page to the other via links. If you got a link from a page with a high PageRank, you would automatically see your page\u2019s PageRank go up. This would then impact your rankings positively. No-follow links don\u2019t pass link juice, although Google has hinted that they still do have some SEO value.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-1\">&#91;1&#93;<\/a><\/sup> When a page from an authoritative website in your industry has a do-follow link to your webpage, you may see your page climb in the rankings after a certain time. However, link equity isn\u2019t just passed from other website\u2019s pages to your page, but also from pages on your own website. <a href=\"\/en\/wiki\/Internal_Linking\" title=\"Internal Linking\">Internal links<\/a> can also pass authority and can be very important for SEO.<br \/>\nVarious philosophies and tactics for moving link juice to your site, moving it around your site, and keeping it on your site\/pages have been developed by SEO\u2019s over the years. Creating \u201csilo\u2019s\u201d is a good example of one of these tactics, which has been tweaked and changed as Google has rolled out various algorithm updates. The effectiveness of these different tactics varies and has changed over the years as Google has made tweaks to its algorithm.\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"How_is_link_juice_determined.3F\">How is link juice determined?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember that link juice is a descriptive term used to describe how authority passes through do-follow links. It is not something that can be determined or measured to a great deal of accuracy, especially considering how secretive Google is when it comes to its algorithm and how it interprets links. However, there are some things that SEOs and SEO tools tend to look at when determining how much value a link passes on to the page it links to. Some of these things are:\n<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"The_authority_of_the_page_the_link_is_from\">The authority of the page the link is from<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If a link is from a trusted website with a rich history and a lot of high-quality content, then the link will pass more value than a link from a site with less authority.\n<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"The_type_of_link\">The type of link<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The \u201cno-follow\u201d attribute is used to show <a href=\"\/en\/wiki\/Search_Engine_Crawlers\" title=\"Search Engine Crawlers\">crawlers<\/a> that a link shouldn\u2019t be followed. Although it is general consensus that no-follow links still offer some value, it\u2019s do-follow links that pass authority between pages.\n<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"The_page.E2.80.99s_content\">The page\u2019s content<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Various elements of the page the link is from, like the relevance of the text, the number of other links on the page, and the location of the link on the page, among others, can also impact the value of a backlink. Search engines like Google have set forth specific guidelines that webmasters should follow to ensure their linking practices do not adversely affect their site&#8217;s rankings. These guidelines caution against manipulative link schemes, excessive link exchanges, and the creation of links that are not editorially placed or vouched for by the site&#8217;s owner.\n<\/p>\n<p>Violating these guidelines can result in penalties, including a loss of link juice or even a complete de-indexing of the site from search results. Therefore, it&#8217;s essential to acquire and maintain backlinks in a manner that aligns with these guidelines to preserve the SEO value of links pointing to your website.\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Link-focused_Google_algorithm_updates\">Link-focused Google algorithm updates<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There have been various Google algorithm updates that impacted link juice and how it moves from one site to another. Many of these targeted spam links, preventing link juice from passing through spam links or even penalizing sites with a lot of spammy backlinks. Some of the most important updates include:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>PageRank Algorithm (1998):<\/strong> Introduced the concept of ranking web pages based on the quality and quantity of backlinks, laying the foundation for backlinks as a ranking factor. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Penguin Update (April 2012):<\/strong> Targeted sites engaging in link schemes and manipulative backlink practices. Penalized sites violating Google\u2019s Webmaster Guidelines and devalued spammy backlinks, preventing them from passing (as much) link juice. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Penguin 4.0 (September 2016):<\/strong> Integrated Penguin into Google&#8217;s core algorithm, operating in real-time. Shifted from penalizing entire sites to devaluing spammy links.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fred Update (March 2017):<\/strong> Focused on sites with low-quality content and unnatural backlinks. Emphasized the importance of organic link building and penalized artificial backlink practices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google Link Spam Algorithm Update (July 26, 2021):<\/strong> Aimed at identifying and nullifying link spam. Warned that sites engaging in link spam tactics could see ranking changes. Sponsored, guest, and affiliate content were most likely to be impacted. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Google December 2022 Link Spam Update (December 14, 2022 &#8211; January 12, 2023):<\/strong> Focused on neutralizing or no longer counting links that Google deemed spammy and against its guidelines. This update leveraged Google&#8217;s SpamBrain, a machine learning system, to improve spam detection. SpamBrain was capable of detecting sites buying links and sites used for passing outgoing links. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Importance_for_SEO\">Importance for SEO<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google uses backlinks as part of its algorithm. Although the way backlinks are used seems to be very different than in the days when PageRank was openly visible, they are still seen as a very important factor for helping web pages rank higher in the SERPs.\n<\/p>\n<p>Backlinks serve as endorsements, signalling to search engines that other websites vouch for your content.
